This member of the Marantaceae family is also known as the Rattlesnake Plant for its striking patterns. Its long and narrow leaes have ruffled edges that are unique to this Calathea species. They are bright green with alternating dark-green markings down each leaf. The underside of the leaves are purple. Coming from the prayer plant family, the Calathea is known to fold its leaves upwards and inwards at night time (or in the dark) in a prayer-like motion.

The plant is sold in a plastic grow pot. Add a decorative pot to complete the look.

PLANT CARE & INFO

Calathea’s may need pruning once their leaves turn brown or yellow, and re-potted once the roots start to come out of the base of the plastic pot. Other than that, this is a fairly low-maintenance house plant. For best growth conditions, place your Calathea lancifolia in a well-lit area, but avoid putting her in direct sunlight as this could lead to burnt leaves!

Be careful not to kill this one with kindness. Literally. If you over water your Calathea, you may start to notice sad, drooping leaves. Ensure the top layer of the soil has dried up before replenishing, then give it a good water. Fertilize in the growing season.

Misting on the other hand, is something you can’t over-do. Calathea’s love humid environments, so misting the thick leaves would be greatly appreciated by your plant.

This house plant is non-toxic, so perfect for pet-owners.
